Empowering Educators through Asynchronous Learning Modules Amid the Pandemic

Roles

Project Manager, Curriculum Designer, Content Writer, Video Recording + Editor

Challenge

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which required the adoption of remote and hybrid learning models, schools utilizing Empowering Education’s K-12 curriculum articulated a need for asynchronous learning modules in addition to traditional in-person training for educators.

  • Feedback surveys and interviews were conducted internally within Empowering Education and across schools employing its curriculum. Trends emphasized the necessity for educators to have the flexibility to complete training virtually, review content before teaching, support novice and substitute teachers, and progress through modules with a cohort.

  • Module topics were determined through a synthesis of school training feedback surveys and current research from the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

  • Given that Empowering Education’s curriculum was already accessible digitally, the proposed modules were seamlessly integrated into the existing platform to simplify access for educators.

Process

  • Acknowledging the diverse learning preferences of adults, the design ensured a self-paced and cohort-based online course, enabling participants to pause videos, engage in group discussions, take quizzes, review articles, complete reflection activities, and revisit specific sections at their convenience.

  • For the development of video content, educators and experts were recruited and interviewed for each module topic. The team crafted course outlines, while facilitators contributed content based on their lived experiences, classroom strategies, and responses to common questions in the field.

  • Upon completion of each module, a feedback survey is administered to gather user input, providing the team with recommendations for ongoing iteration and enhancement of the learning program.

Outcome

Three asynchronous modules were developed, catering to over 100 subscribed members: Empowering Education Orientation, Diversity, Equity + Inclusion, and Trauma-Informed Teaching. These modules grant educators 24/7 access, facilitating the success of Social Emotional Learning programming at their respective schools.
